Fixtures and fittings of London’s first minimalist hotel under hammer
(TRAVPR.COM) UK - September 5th, 2013 - When the Hempel Hotel London closed in December 2012 its future looked uncertain, now the contents of the famous minimalist hotel are being sold off and anyone can buy a piece of hotel history at the sale at the hotel, 31-35 Craven Hill Gardens, from 10am on 12th September 2013 or bid online.
When the famous five-star London hotel first opened in 1997, it was the first of its kind. Founded by designer Anouska Hempel, it was the trendiest hotel in London, praised for its stark, all-white interiors, an absence of clutter and unique design. Now the contents of 40 bedrooms and 20 suites are to be disposed of and everything is to be auctioned off.
A favourite with celebrities like Michael Jackson and Victoria and David Beckham, the sale of the contents of the Bayswater hotel has prompted a huge amount of interest, both from the UK and abroad, and auctioneer Mark Flynn is “preparing for a packed house.”
The Hempel sale not only gives buyers a chance to own ‘something from The Hempel’ but is also an opportunity to acquire designer quality fixtures and fittings at a fraction of the original cost.
As well as designer items including the entire contents of the Beluga Suite, comprising designer inspired Palecek four poster bed and Hypnos mattress, buyers can bid for more unusual pieces like a dumb waiter with three stainless steel draws.
From its heyday in the 1990s the Hempel changed hands several times in recent years. In 2001 the hotel’s founder was forced out by her Japanese backers, Fujita, and the property was subsequently sold to O&H Properties in 2003, then acquired by a consortium of private Irish investors in 2005 for around £16.5 million.
The famous boutique hotel will now become a collection of luxury flats having been bought for £33 million in March this year by developer British Land.
The sale will take place on 12th September 2013 at the hotel, 31-35 Craven Hill Gardens, from 10am. Online bidding is possible through proauction.com and viewings are from 8.30am to 6.30pm on 10th and 11th September 2013.
