A host of A-list stars come out to celebrate London’s National Theatre

(TRAVPR.COM) UK - September 5th, 2013 - Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Simon Russell Beale, Michael Gambon and Derek Jacobi are part of an all-star cast of actors celebrating London’s National Theatre which reaches its 50thanniversary this November. ‘50 Years On Stage’ will be performed in front of an invitation-only audience on 2nd November and broadcast live on BBC2 and to cinemas internationally. But members of the public have the chance to see a Special Preview performance on Friday 1st November 2013 and theatre lovers coming to London for the extraordinary event can book the a fantastic London hotel and make it a special night.

Some of the best actors, directors, writers and designers who have worked at the National over the past five decades are taking part in ‘50 Years On Stage’ including Frances de la Tour, Ralph Fiennes, Rory Kinnear, Maggie Smith and Penelope Wilton.

They will perform extracts from past National productions like ‘Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead’, ‘The History Boys’, and ‘Guys and Dolls’. The show will also be a suitable send-off for departing artistic director Nicholas Hytner whose successor is expected to be announced in October. Tickets at a cost of £300 and £500 are limited to two per person.

If the cost is prohibitive, there are several 50th anniversary events which audiences can enjoy for free including 'Chris Arthur: Scenes from National life', an exhibition in the Lyttelton Exhibition Area from 9th September celebrating the National’s very first company with unseen portraits, including Anthony Hopkins, Maggie Smith and Laurence Olivier.

At the Olivier Exhibition Area, from 19th September 2013, the exhibition ‘National Theatre Lampoon’ tells the story of the National from the early 1900s to today. And the 'Uncover' trail, from 1st October until 10th November, will take the audience on an interactive journey around the National Theatre uncovering its hidden history.

In addition, there's a series of Platform lunchtime discussions (from 1st October 2013) looking at some of the developments and changes in theatre over the past 50 years, revealing some personal stories about the National, and looking towards the future challenges facing theatre over the next 50 years.

The Queen will make a special visit to the National Theatre on 22nd October 2013, 50 years after Peter O'Toole starred as Hamlet on the opening night of the National Theatre at the Old Vic Theatre.
