First new London hotel from man behind Sanderson and St. Martins Lane in 15 years

(TRAVPR.COM) UK - September 12th, 2013 - Legendary hotel designer Ian Schrager opens his first London hotel in 15 years on Thursday 12th September 2013 with The London EDITION, an exciting new hotel which fuses contemporary design with period touches in sympathy with the historic 1908 building it occupies.

The London hotel is latest opening from the EDITION Hotels brand which Schrager has worked on in partnership with the Marriott hotel group. On the site of the former Berners Hotel in Fitzrovia, built in 1908 and closed since 2006, The London EDITION is an exciting new addition to the designer hotels in London.

The historic Grade ll listed Berners Street building, originally built in 1835 as five separate houses, has had a £33 million makeover to become a luxury lifestyle hotel complete with a restaurant, Berner’s Tavern, run by Jason Atherton, the chef behind the Michelin starred Pollen Street Social in Mayfair and more recent Social Eating House which opened in Soho earlier this year.

The façade of the building, the stucco ceilings and variegated marbles in the lobby have all been painstakingly restored, and an new art piece, ‘Prosopopoeia’ commissioned by artist Mat Collishaw to welcome guests into the lobby. The interior has been extensively refurbished to create a stylish 173-bedroom hotel with two bars, a 24-hour fitness facility and rooms and suites with wood panelling akin to cabins on a private yacht. 

David Taylor, general manager of the Hoxton Hotel since its launch five-and-a-half years ago, has been appointed general manager.
