From dark fairytales to family productions, LondonTown.com explores the autumn programme of London's theatre emporium
(TRAVPR.COM) UK - September 24th, 2013 - A main highlight of the Royal National Theatre's autumn programme is the premiere of The Light Princess, a new fairytale written by Tori Amos which was originally planned to open in 2012. With previews from the 25th September, the musical officially opens on 9th October 2013 and will run until January 2014 on the National's Lyttelton stage. Covering grief, rebellion and the power of love, the dark fairytale tells the story of a prince and princess who have both lost their mothers. When they meet in the midst of a war, the pair start an illicit affair but the princess must still confront the darkness and her fears. Tickets for The Light Princess can be booked through LondonTown.com, where a great selection of London hotels can also be found.
Proof of the generous scheduling at London's theatre emporium, From Morning to Midnight opens in the Lyttelton Theatre on 19th November and will run concurrently with The Light Princess until January 2014. Dennis Kelly's new version of Georg Kaiser's 20th century tragedy explores how an ordinary man steps out of his comfort zone and in one turbulent day is led down a delusional path to destruction.
Following on from Othello starring Adrian Lester and Rory Kinnear, which runs until 5th October, Emil and the Detectives opens on 25th November at the Olivier Theatre. An adaptation of Erich Kastner's 1929 children's novel, the family production follows a young boy as he leaves his small town and family to embark on a life-changing journey. Travelling alone through 1920s Berlin, Emil is met by surprises and danger but soon begins to learn the kindness of strangers.
Still standing strong on London's South Bank, temporary structure The Shed continues to stage productions throughout autumn, including The World of Extreme Happiness opening on 25th September. Another tale of self-discovery, the production focuses on Sunny as she leaves home in rural China for the promise of a job in a factory and a new life. However, as the reality of mopping factory floors dawns, the new future is proving to be hard and leaves Sunny striving for more.
Autumn also sees the National Theatre celebrate 50 years on stage with an evening of live performance and rare glimpses from the theatre's archives, featuring a number of celebrated actors who have graced the London stages over the past five decades. Friday 1st November will offer a special preview performance for the public before the gala performance on 2nd November which will be performed in front of an invitation-only audience and broadcast live on BBC2. A host of actors, directors, writers and designers who have worked at the National are taking part including Frances de la Tour, Ralph Fiennes, Rory Kinnear, Maggie Smith and Penelope Wilton. The show will be a wonderful send-off for departing artistic director Nicholas Hytner whose successor is expected to be announced in October.
