LondonTown.com reports on the top events happening in the capital this weekend
(TRAVPR.COM) UK - January 16th, 2014 - Ahead of the return of ITV's drama 'Mr Selfridge' this Sunday, Selfridges takes inspiration from Harry Gordon Selfridge's famous mantra, "imagination is the mother of originality, we encourage imagination in every way possible", to host the Festival of Imagination. Inviting the likes of children's poet Carol Ann Duffy, designer David McCandless and Academy Award-winning filmmaker Simon Chinn to take part, the festival will include a range of inspiring talks and events. It will also see the store's shelves filled with pioneering products that lead the way in design, fashion and technology.
Further London events taking place this weekend include the London International Mime Festival and London Short Film Festival. Running for over thirty years, the well-established Mime Festival brings contemporary visual arts from all around the world to London and sees famous venues such as the Royal Opera House, Southbank Centre and Roundhouse host an extensive programme of events. Back for its 11th year, the Short Film Festival is another celebrated occasion on London's calendar, renowned for screening cutting-edge independent films at around twenty venues across the city.
Now in its 26th year, the London Art Fair returns for five days this week, bringing art from across the globe to the Business Design Centre. With prices starting at as little as £20, its appeal spans from the amateur collector to the professional. Art of a more humorous nature can be found at the Cartoon Museum, which is currently hosting its Bring Me Laughter exhibition. Bringing together works from more than forty artists and caricatures, the exhibition displays some of the funniest items from the museum's archives.
Year-long festival Chamber Classics Unwrapped launched at Kings Place this week. In order to celebrate the association that Kings Place has with chamber music, the festival sees the venue depart from its usual 'unwrapping' format - each year is usually dedicated to a single composer – and instead focus on chamber music as an entirety.
This weekend also sees the arrival of the London branch of New York's famous bowling Alley, Brooklyn Bowl. With 12 lanes of bowling, an 800-capacity concert venue and American style food and beers, it's possible that this London branch could do for bowling what PING and Bounce did for ping pong.
