London’s Nine Elms district gets into the spirit of Chelsea Fringe with pop-up forest and guided walks
(TRAVPR.COM) UK - May 15th, 2014 - The Chelsea Fringe is a horticultural festival that takes over a host of unusual venues and runs parallel to the main Chelsea Flower Show. Among the programme of events will be a pop-up forest and tours of New Covent Garden Flower Market, one of the venues at the centre of the burgeoning Nine Elms district between Vauxhall and Battersea.
The programme of events will begin on 17th May with a White Rabbit theatrical walk around the area, and events will continue to run for three weeks. Nine Elms is just across the river from Victoria and Westminster. To get the most out of the area, visit LondonTown.com, the London website that contains all the latest information for restaurants, galleries, museums, shops and bars as well as booking details for those hoping to find a cheap hotel in London.
This is the third Chelsea Fringe and will take place at a host of different venues and settings across London, including Nine Elms. It features an eclectic mixture of public spectacles, horticultural happenings and community celebrations. In Nine Elms the events will look at the future of green developments at Nine Elms and explore walks and talks throughout the area, using such devices as the quirky and creative White Rabbit walks that will bring to life the Nine Elms area through a unique theatrical performance that tells a story of heritage and renewal. At the same time, a pop-up forest in the middle of Vauxhall will emphasise the ‘greening’ of the Nine Elms area (24th to 31st May 2014). Trees will be planted out into the district following the Fringe and London Tree Week
There will also be an open weekend (7th and 8th May), offering the chance to talk with landscape architect, Camlins, on the creation of a linear park – the green ribbon of public realm that ties together the many new developments currently underway in Nine Elms, including the development of Battersea Power Station and the construction of a new American Embassy. Green connectivity will also be the focus of The Missing Link walk on 25th May, a guided walk explaining innovative greening plans to link the Garden Museum to the new linear park.
A family fun day at Vauxhall City Farm on 25th May will provide games, crafts and activities to get the whole family into the growing spirit, while guided tours of Covent Garden Flower Market on 23rd and 24th May will showcase Nine Elms horticultural heritage and the beautifully scented home of the flower market. Other events will look at existing local communities including Eden Community Garden, Doddington + Rollo Community Roof Garden and Bonnington Square, and a pop-up sculpture garden.
